Sleepover Secrets

Gretchen

My tiny loveseat doesn’t fit Noah’s huge frame. The cushions are so sunken from his weight that I’m fully leaning into him on an angle. Yet, I’ve never been more comfortable or content.

After guarding my heart for years, somehow this man came running in, nimble and swift, and stole it right from under me. It’s crazy to think… but I love him. I feel like I’ve known him forever.

His arm is wrapped around my shoulders, Violet fast asleep on my lap as we stare at the shimmering lights of the tree. It’s a mess of multicolored lights and looks uneven because most of the decorations are at the bottom of the tree to accommodate Violet’s height, but it’s beautiful.

“How did practice go today?” Noah’s voice is a quiet murmur in my ear.

“Shouldn’t that be my question to you?”

Shaking my shoulder gently, he chuckles. “I don’t have practice anymore. My team’s done for the season.”

Oh. I didn’t know that. I guess with Noah in my life, I’ll have to actually start paying attention to football. I need to know things like this.

The sudden realization that Noah could—and probably would—have to leave us in the New Year to go back to his team hits me. My stomach aches at the thought of not being able to see him for weeks at a time. I don’t want to ruin our moment of peace and quiet, so I keep those thoughts to myself.

“Bell practice went well. We don’t have any performances booked until New Year’s Eve, so it was basically just the Jingle Ladies getting together one last time before Christmas to have fun.”

He shifts, turning to me so I can see his eyes crinkle in humor. “I’m sorry,” he begins. “Did you just say jingle ladies?”

“Yeah, it’s our bell ensemble group’s name. All My Jingle Ladies.”

“That’s fuc— fudging brilliant.” He catches the curse, eyes darting to make sure Violet is still sleeping. “That’s an awesome name.”

I nod. I thought the same thing too when I joined the group a couple of years ago. It had been a fluke, me joining a bell group. I’d been picking Violet up from her junior kindergarten class when the music teacher Libby, now my good friend, told me about the group needing more members. I had just moved to the area and thought it would be a fun way to make friends. Little did I know I would fall in love with the activity and be so good at it.

“I’m going to put this little monster to bed. You wore her out with all the decorating you did tonight. Tree and cookies.”

“Do you need help?” The question is simple but packs a punch. I’m so used to taking care of Violet on my own that the offer of help surprises me and reaffirms everything I already somehow know about Noah—he’s a good one.

“I’m good. Thanks though.” I give him a quick kiss, wanting to show him I appreciate the offer, before scooping Violet up into my arms.
