Sleepover Secrets
Gretchen
My tiny loveseat doesnât fit Noahâs huge frame. The cushions are so sunken from his weight that Iâm fully leaning into him on an angle. Yet, Iâve never been more comfortable or content.
After guarding my heart for years, somehow this man came running in, nimble and swift, and stole it right from under me. Itâs crazy to think⦠but I love him. I feel like Iâve known him forever.
His arm is wrapped around my shoulders, Violet fast asleep on my lap as we stare at the shimmering lights of the tree. Itâs a mess of multicolored lights and looks uneven because most of the decorations are at the bottom of the tree to accommodate Violetâs height, but itâs beautiful.
âHow did practice go today?â Noahâs voice is a quiet murmur in my ear.
âShouldnât that be my question to you?â
Shaking my shoulder gently, he chuckles. âI donât have practice anymore. My teamâs done for the season.â
Oh. I didnât know that. I guess with Noah in my life, Iâll have to actually start paying attention to football. I need to know things like this.
The sudden realization that Noah couldâand probably wouldâhave to leave us in the New Year to go back to his team hits me. My stomach aches at the thought of not being able to see him for weeks at a time. I donât want to ruin our moment of peace and quiet, so I keep those thoughts to myself.
âBell practice went well. We donât have any performances booked until New Yearâs Eve, so it was basically just the Jingle Ladies getting together one last time before Christmas to have fun.â
He shifts, turning to me so I can see his eyes crinkle in humor. âIâm sorry,â he begins. âDid you just say jingle ladies?â
âYeah, itâs our bell ensemble groupâs name. All My Jingle Ladies.â
âThatâs fucâ fudging brilliant.â He catches the curse, eyes darting to make sure Violet is still sleeping. âThatâs an awesome name.â
I nod. I thought the same thing too when I joined the group a couple of years ago. It had been a fluke, me joining a bell group. Iâd been picking Violet up from her junior kindergarten class when the music teacher Libby, now my good friend, told me about the group needing more members. I had just moved to the area and thought it would be a fun way to make friends. Little did I know I would fall in love with the activity and be so good at it.
âIâm going to put this little monster to bed. You wore her out with all the decorating you did tonight. Tree and cookies.â
âDo you need help?â The question is simple but packs a punch. Iâm so used to taking care of Violet on my own that the offer of help surprises me and reaffirms everything I already somehow know about Noahâheâs a good one.
âIâm good. Thanks though.â I give him a quick kiss, wanting to show him I appreciate the offer, before scooping Violet up into my arms.
